On having the iPad2 – an update

In recognition of the recent release of “the new iPad” I am finally posting a draft of what I wrote about my iPad 2 purchase a year ago. To be honest about it, I don’t feel that the new iPad is as mucha game changer as was the 2nd iPad. Aside from the new screen (which I think is the most excellent feature, there isn’t anything really revolutionary about the new device. It feels more like a minor upgrade than a “game changer”. Anyway, here’s what I wrote about e iPad 2 last year.

I finally bit the bullet and bought myself the iPad2. I told myself that when the iPad gets a front and back facing camera, i’d relent and get myself one. It’s been a full week since I lined up to get it. So, what do I think about it?

First off, I think it’s a wonderful device, It has so many possible uses. I initially thought that the experience would be like using sn ipod touch. I have the 2nd gen touch and it doesn’t get anywhere near the experience of using the iPad.

The iPad has several glaring advantages to the touch. The most important of which is the size of the screen. It’s not the retina display that the iPhone 4 has but it’s HD enough for me. An obvious advantage woulde be the screen size – it’s really big! I don’t have to scroll left and right as much as I needed too in the iPod touch. There’s been no need to zoom in at sections and pan the text left and right. Having a good-sized keboard is great too. I don’t need precision typing as much as with smaller keypads. There some disadvantages to the wide display in conjuction with the keyboard but I’ll get to that later.

When it comes to connectivity, I seriously recommend getting the 3G+WiFi version. I know that there’s been a lot of talk about just getting the WiFi version (the 16Gb version to boot) due to usage preferences or network availability. I actually use the iPad mostly while commuting so it makes sense to be connected during those times. Of course when youre at home you’d want to rely more on your WiFi especially when downloading large apps or games.

As for the storage capacity, well, you can definitely spoil yourself with the 64Gb version or go lean with the 16Gb one. I went for the sweet spot at 32Gb. I don’t store a lot if movies on my device so i’m pretty ok with the harddisk size.
